FAQ

Straight answers to fair questions.

The roof scan

How accurate is the scan?

In the metros it measures every roof face from Google’s 3D solar data and simulates a year of sun across it, including shade from trees and buildings. Elsewhere it measures the roof from its aerial outline, and the price range is wider to match. Either way it is close enough to size a system and give you a fair range. The fixed quote comes after a site visit.

The photo of my house looks old. Does that matter?

The aerial photos can be several years old. If your roof has changed since (an extension, a new carport, a tree that’s gone), mention it. The installer checks on site before anything is final.

It says it can’t see my roof.

A few addresses have no usable aerial data. You can still get an estimate: we ask how big the house is and size the system from that and your bill.

Why do you want my number before the full breakdown?

You see the system and the price range without giving us anything. The line-by-line breakdown comes with a site visit, and we text a code to make sure the number is really yours before anyone calls it.

Do I get a copy?

Yes. Once you confirm your number we email you the estimate as a PDF, with every assumption listed, so you can hold other quotes against it.

Solar and batteries

Do I need a battery?

Only if you want backup power or want to use more of your solar at night. Solar alone cuts your bill in daylight. The estimate prices it both ways.

How long will a battery last in an outage?

It depends on what’s running. Leaving the kettle and geyser off makes a big difference. The installer sizes the battery to the circuits you want kept on.

Single phase or three phase?

Most homes are single phase. If you’re not sure, it doesn’t matter for the scan. The installer checks your supply on the site visit.

What happens when I sell the house?

A registered system with a Certificate of Compliance is an asset in a sale. Keep the CoC, the registration and the warranty documents together.

Who does what

Is SolarCheck an installer?

No. SolarCheck measures your roof and prepares the estimate. If you ask for a quote, our installation partner for your area visits, writes the binding quote and does the install.

Does my system need to be registered?

Systems connected to the grid need to be registered with your municipality or Eskom. Ask the installer to handle the application and give you proof of it.

What’s a Certificate of Compliance?

A CoC is the certificate a registered electrician issues to confirm the electrical work meets the wiring regulations. Your insurer can ask for it after a claim, and so can a buyer.

What warranties do I get?

Panels, inverters and batteries carry the manufacturers’ warranties, and the installer gives its own workmanship terms. Get the exact terms for your equipment in the written quote.

Do you sell my details?

No. They go to one installation partner, only if you ask for a quote. See the privacy notice.
